Software Development Engineer - Retail Browse Experience at Amazon (Seattle, WA)

Join our small, motivated and highly agile team to help create world-class experiences for customers browsing Earth's Biggest Selection. You will build tools that enable Retail teams around the globe create customized shopping experiences. You will write systems that analyze and visualize terabytes of data to improve our understanding of how we can help our customers find the right product among the hundreds of millions of items in our catalog.

As a Software Development Engineer on our team, you will be responsible for designing and implementing tools used by thousands of internal users. While most of the systems you work on will be written from scratch, you will also get a chance to learn how to operate and evolve existing back-end services that handle huge amounts of traffic and adhere to very tight latency and availability SLAs. You can expect to work mostly in Java, utilizing a state-of-the-art service framework and Amazon-scale build, test and continuous deployment tools. However, we will keep using a variety of languages to accomplish our goals (Java, C++, HTML/CSS/JS, Perl, etc.).

This position gives you a unique opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of Amazon's e-commerce taxonomy and truly work end-to-end across team borders. Your work will span from developing core back-end features running on hundreds of servers all the way to incorporating feedback from our merchandizing teams and information scientist into your front-end code. The results of your work will be highly visible and have a direct impact on how custom stores across all Amazon marketplaces are built. It will also inform Retail business teams on what areas of our catalog work should be focused to ultimately improve the shopping experience for our customers.

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related discipline
- Proficiency in Java
- Strong skills in data structures, algorithms and object oriented design
- Track record of delivering high quality production software

- Master's degree in Computer Science
- 3+ years professional design and development experience
- Leadership experience in building distributed software systems
- Experience building front-end tools using HTML/CSS/JavaScript
- Ability to communicate effectively with users, technical teams, and management
