Questions about The Motley Fool Techspandex program

Wait, Techspandex ... what?

Our goal is to expand our tech group with the very best people, and spandex is an expandable stretchy material worn by people and heavy metal hair bands from the 1980’s.  Makes sense now, right?

Specifically, what roles are you looking for?

Software developers, front end web developers, web user experience designers, web/dev operations folks, and dilithium crystal experts.

What about quality assurance, project managers, desktop support, networking, DBA’s and other tech-related roles?

Sorry, we are not looking for those roles in this program.

Is this a full-time position? Yes, we anticipate about 40 hours per week.

When does the program start and end? We are starting April 1st and ending August 1st.

Will I have a permanent job after the four month program?

Maybe.  You need to love us, and we need to love you.

Do I need to be authorized to work in the US? Yes.

You mentioned dilithium crystals?  Yes we did.

How much experience do I need to have?

At least two years of professional experience (not in dog years).

What kinds of experience?

It is good to have experience with web and internet technologies, public facing websites, agile methodologies, small fast teams, familiarity with our site and products, and any investing/financial background is welcomed.

Which technologies are good for me to be familiar with?

For Web Engineers: Web server farms, load balancing, caching and automation technologies like Varnish and Salt, and Win/Lin systems. For others: Python/Django, C#, Javascript, Angular/Node JS, HTML, CSS, Sass/LESS, Responsive Design, and PostgreSQL/Microsoft SQL/MySQL.

Anything else?

We find that passionate, clear communicating, smart, well-rounded, friendly, cool, technically sound, not overly-introverted, and emotionally intelligent people do well here.

What will you pay me? Money.

No, I mean how much money?

The pay will be market competitive (yes, we hate that answer too, but it really depends on you), and will include what are in all likelihood the best benefits - including health insurance - that you’ve ever seen.

How will you decide who gets to stay past the four months?

You will be evaluated based on frequent feedback collected primarily from your team and the others you work with.  And you will know where you stand - both where you are doing well, and where you can do better.

Do you have chocolate almond milk in the healthy free food refrigerators?  Yes.

How many people will be in the program? About 10.

How many people will be hired permanently?

We have no specific target in mind, and it depends on you, but we are looking to keep the best - so not all who start the four month program will be hired at the end.
